The Sharpening Dude — Annandale, VA

Laser Engraving & Custom Work

Permanent marks, custom gear, and one-off gifts — made in-house on a fiber laser and finished by hand. If you can picture it, we can probably make it.

Most sharpening shops can put an edge on your steel. We can put your name on it. The same shed that dials in your skates also runs a fiber laser and a precision vinyl cutter — which means we mark, engrave, and personalize in materials almost nobody else at the rink touches: stainless steel, wood, leather, acrylic, slate, glass, and anodized metal.

This page is a tour of what's possible. There's no order form here on purpose. Our cataloged work lives on our Etsy storefront, Morgan's Iceworks — Etsy makes custom orders easier to handle — and one-off or bespoke pieces are quoted by email. Browse what we make, or tell us what you have in mind.

On the Ice

Rink and skate work no other DMV shop offers

BladeMark™ Blade Etching

Our signature laser service: your name, number, initials, or a custom design permanently etched into the steel of your runners. It doesn't wash off, wear off, or rub off — it's marked into the metal itself. In a locker room full of identical black skates, that's instant identification, a theft deterrent on expensive steel, and a genuinely sharp personal touch. Hockey runners, goalie steel, and figure blades all work.

Gear, Bags & Sticks

Beyond the blade, we personalize the rest of the kit:

  • Bag tags and skate-guard tags — engraved leather or metal, so a dropped bag or a stray guard finds its way home.
  • Stick personalization — name or logo on the shaft or butt-end.
  • Water bottles and tumblers — name, number, and team, engraved to last.
  • Helmet and bucket decals — name bars, numbers, flags, and team marks in cut vinyl.
  • Locker and stall name plates — for clubs, rinks, and home setups.

Team Packages

For coaches and team managers, we bundle all of the above into full-team orders — matching blade etching, name bars, bag tags, custom apparel, and bottles in one coordinated batch. One point of contact, one consistent look for the whole bench. Email your roster and what you're after and we'll put together a quote.

The xTool FS1 laser at TSD

Marked on a Fiber Laser

Our engraving runs on an xTool FS1 — an enclosed fiber-and-diode laser, powerful enough to mark hardened steel and precise enough for fine artwork. It's the capability that lets us etch a blade cleanly without compromising it, and it's why our marks are permanent rather than printed. Vinyl, decals, and apparel are cut and pressed on a Cricut Maker.

Awards, Gifts & Keepsakes

For competitions, banquets, and the people who earned them
  • Custom awards and trophies — engraved acrylic, wood, or metal for tournaments, clubs, and end-of-season banquets.
  • Commemorative ornaments and plaques — first season, championship, senior night, retirement.
  • Engraved drinkware — tumblers, mugs, glassware, and water bottles.
  • Coasters and cutting boards — slate, wood, or acrylic, personalized.
  • Keychains and tags — leather, wood, acrylic, or metal.
  • Photo engraving — a photo etched into wood, acrylic, or metal for a true one-of-a-kind.

These make especially good coach gifts, senior-night presents, and team-parent thank-yous.

Signs, Decals & Apparel

Cut, pressed, and engraved to order
  • Custom decals and stickers — any design, for helmets, water bottles, cars, windows, and laptops.
  • Apparel customization — names, numbers, and logos heat-pressed onto jerseys, hoodies, tees, hats, and bags.
  • Signs and plaques — engraved wood or acrylic for home, rink, or business.
  • Small-business branding — engraved signage, product tags, and packaging marks.

Bring Us Your Idea

If it fits in the laser, we can probably mark it

The lists above are a starting point, not a limit. The fiber laser marks and engraves stainless steel, anodized aluminum, brass, and titanium; the diode side handles wood, leather, acrylic, slate, painted and coated surfaces, and more. The Cricut cuts vinyl and heat-transfer material for anything we stick or press.

If you've got a material, an object, or an idea you're not sure about, just ask. Tell us what you want to accomplish and we'll tell you straight whether we can do it and how.

How to Order

Two simple paths

Browse Etsy or Request a Quote

Cataloged items: our ready-to-order products and their pricing live on our Etsy storefront, Morgan's Iceworks. Etsy keeps options, proofs, and messaging in one place, and your order is protected start to finish.

Custom and bespoke work: for anything one-off, team-sized, or not yet listed, email info@sharpeningdude.com with what you're imagining — material, quantity, the text or artwork, and your timeline — and we'll send back a quote. Photos or sketches help.

Common Questions

What materials can you engrave?

Metals including stainless steel, anodized aluminum, brass, and titanium; plus wood, leather, acrylic, slate, and coated glass and drinkware. For decals and apparel we cut vinyl and heat-transfer material. If your material isn't on that list, ask — there's a good chance we can still do it.

Can you really engrave my skate blades?

Yes — that's BladeMark. The mark is etched into the steel itself, so it's permanent and doesn't affect your edge or how the blade sharpens. Hockey runners, goalie steel, and figure blades all work.

How does pricing work?

Cataloged items are priced on our Etsy shop. Custom and team work is quoted by email, since the cost depends on the material, size, level of detail, and quantity. Send us the details and we'll give you a number.

Do you do team or bulk orders?

Absolutely — it's some of our favorite work. Email your roster and what you'd like (blade etching, name bars, bag tags, apparel, bottles) and we'll build one coordinated quote for the whole team.
