The Sharpening Dude — Our Story

Not a Robot. Not a Franchise.

It started with a standard taught to a young man a long time ago — and the slow realization, shop after shop, that nobody around could recreate it. Hundreds spent on skates, thousands on ice time, and the game ruined by a bad sharpening from a kid looking at his phone. The shed was built to fix that.

The Standard That Wouldn’t Die

Long before the shed, somebody taught a young man what a real edge was supposed to feel like. Measured, not guessed. Level, not close enough. Finished by hand and checked before it ever touched ice. The kind of standard that, once it’s in your hands, you can’t unlearn.

Years later, that young man had skates of his own to keep sharp — and a problem. Shop after shop, sharpening after sharpening, nobody could recreate it. The standard hadn’t died. It just wasn’t for sale anywhere nearby.

So he did something about it. A bench. A shed. The physics instead of the gimmicks. The Sharpening Dude wasn’t built in a boardroom — it was built on a workbench, around one decision that still drives everything: I’d rather do fewer sharpenings and do them right, than do a thousand and guess.

The Craftsman’s Code

Sharpening isn’t a chore — it’s a craft. It’s the only connection between you and the ice, and if that connection is off, your game is off.

  • We Measure, We Don’t Guess: Every edge is checked with precision gauges.
  • Hand-Finished: Automatic machines are fast, but they lack feel. I control the pressure, the pass speed, and the final hone.
  • Education First: I don’t just grind steel; I explain why a certain hollow or profile works for your stride.

Workflow

“My job is simple: make your skates feel predictable — so your game can be unpredictable.”

What to Expect

  1. The Intake
We talk hollows, profiles, and what issues you're feeling on the ice.
  2. The Inspection
We check for nicks, bent steel, and uneven wear before we grind.
  3. The Grind
Precision passes. Consistent pressure. Hand-honed finish.
  4. The Verify
Checked with the gauge to ensure square edges.

The Bench Belongs to the DMV

Hockey players and figure skaters. Goalies and refs. Mites on their first edges and adults chasing one more beer-league season. Team bags welcome — text first and the bench will be ready. The standard is the same for every pair of skates that crosses it.

And the knowledge isn’t kept behind the counter. The whole Learn library — hollows, profiles, guides for players and parents — is free to everyone, whether your skates have ever seen this shed or not.

One more thing: The Dude doesn’t rank clubs, rinks, or programs — he sharpens for all of them. The bench is neutral ice.

From The Bench (FAQ)

Is The Dude a real person?

Very. His name is John, and his are the only hands your steel will ever see here. No employees, no rotation, no kid looking at his phone — the same person, the same standard, every single visit.

Do you use automatic machines?

No. We believe in hand-finished control. Robots can't feel the steel or adjust for unique wear patterns. We do it the old school way.

What if I don't know my hollow?

That’s normal. We’ll look at your weight, position, and skating style to recommend a starting point. Then we adjust based on your feedback.

Do you sharpen Figure Skates?

Yes. We treat figure blades with the same precision as hockey steel. We respect the toe pick and the specific geometry of the blade.

Can I just drop them off?

You can, but we prefer appointments so you aren't waiting. If you have a team bag (5+ pairs), please text us first to arrange a drop-off time.

The Shed Is Open. The Standard Is Back.

Bring your steel, your questions, or the whole team bag. You aren't a ticket number here — you're a neighbor. Let's make sure you have the best edge on the ice.
